For most students it will be between 5 and 12 weeks but does not extend past the end of the school.
All students are reviewed after 4 full weeks at the Centre. A decision is then made by all interested parties at this meeting.
ASSC provides a safe, small, supportive learning environment where students needs are met and where they are challenged to develop the self-confidence and self-esteem to achieve their maximum potential in academic, social and cultural opportunities.
Year 11 students undertake NCEA qualifications while at the Centre.
Each students programme is individually tailored to suit their level of ability with emphasis on students taking individual responsibility for their learning and remaining up to date with their work.
Auckland Secondary Schools' Centre (ASSC) is an Activity Centre based in Herne Bay, that provides alternative schooling for secondary students, whose behaviour and learning needs are not met in mainstream schools.
Attending the Centre provides a necessary 'time-out' for secondary school students to reflect on their behaviours, learn strategies they can practice in a small environment and make positive changes to their behaviours before returning to their referring school. Students at the Centre follow the same core curriculum as those in mainstream education.

The average length of stay is around 11 weeks.
By consistently achieving their four behaviour goals that were agreed on when starting at the Centre. Those students who achieve the behavioural goals, and this is the majority, are gradually reintegrated back to their referring schools on a carefully monitored programme.
The current cost to cover each student's lunches, printing, photocopying and books is $20 per week per student.
